When it comes to moving house, packing fragile items is often the most nerve-wracking task. Valuables, heirloom glassware, and delicate electronics require extra care to survive the journey. Fortunately, by utilizing the same techniques as professional packers, you can protect your fragile goods and prevent damage.
Choose the Right Packing Materials
Using quality packing materials is essential. Avoid wrapping delicate items in newspaper, as the ink can smudge and damage paint or ceramic glazes. Instead, invest in clean packing paper, heavy-duty bubble wrap, and double-walled cardboard boxes. You will also need plenty of strong packing tape and a marker pen for labeling.
Wrap Glassware and Ceramics Individually
Never pack glassware loosely. Wrap each glass or ceramic plate individually in packing paper, followed by a layer of bubble wrap. Cushion the bottom of the box with crumpled paper or packing peanuts before adding items. Pack plates vertically rather than stacking them flat, as they can withstand shocks much better this way.
Secure Electronics and Cables Safely
Electronics should ideally be packed in their original boxes. If those are unavailable, wrap devices in anti-static bubble wrap to protect internal circuits. Label cables clearly with colored tape or take a photo before disconnecting them, so you can easily reassemble them at your new home.
Label Boxes Clearly and Cushion the Top
Fill any remaining empty spaces in the box with crumpled paper to prevent items from shifting. Seal the box securely with tape, and write “FRAGILE” and “THIS WAY UP” in bold markers on multiple sides. This alerts the removals team to handle the box with extra care.
